I only found out about the event a few weeks before it happened, so this is probably the costume with the least time put into it out of all of the ones in this portfolio. However, it turned out really nicely, and I would absolutely wear both pieces of it again. This dress is very loosely inspired by evening gowns from the early 1910s. My main references were this 1911 dress and this one from 1908, and these dresses were the main inspiration for the shape of the bodice and over skirt. The tight bodice had more abstract embroidery along the neckline, and the long, fitted sleeves were decorated down the outside of each. While it wasn’t the fashion for ball gowns to have sashes, I wanted to show off my skill with sash-weaving… So I wore a sash of azure and violet and scarlet silk yarns, woven in the most intricate pattern I knew.” This description absolutely caught my attention when I first read the book, but at the time, I didn’t have enough experience to make a full gown like this. This dress was my attempt at that, and was made in winter 2018. I wore it to a ballroom dance performance, where the full circle skirt was perfect for spins like the one I’m doing in the photo to the left. It’s definitely not historically accurate - like most things I’ve done that are historical, they’re based more on the look than keeping things entirely the way they would have been, and so much of this dress is just my own improvisation to get the design I wanted. The inspiration for it actually is somewhat different from what I normally do; usually, when starting a project, I pick a description from a book I really like and run with that. For this, though, I didn’t really have any ideas at all for what I wanted to do, so I went to a local fabric store to browse. There, I found the pink and red lace fabrics that are present on the dress (see below for more detailed pictures of those). They immediately made me think of Persephone, so I bought them and went home to sketch up ideas. The dress itself is very loosely inspired by the shape of the garments worn by Franklin Simmons’ Penelope (1896) and Antonio Canova’s Dancer (1811-1812), though it’s definitely not historically accurate. I wanted there to be a feeling of the wearer being shrouded in mist, so I made a cloak out of thin, sheer white fabric. In theory, a children’s librarian, teacher, or performer could use this as part of a lesson or storytime, and could use the lights to activate kids’ imaginations, which could be a great gateway into astronomy, and STEM through that. The costume itself is based on the book Good Night, Mr. Night, by Dan Yaccarino. I started it just after the last book in the series came out, in late 2020, and finished it in July of 2021. This particular dress is, in my opinion, one of the most significant pieces of clothing in the series, especially to this character. It represents her struggle to maintain power as a single queen ruling over a divided country. In The Thief, one of the other main characters remarks that, “everything about her brought to mind the old religion, and I knew that the resemblance was deliberate, intended to remind her subjects that as Hephestia ruled uncontested among the gods, this woman ruled Attolia.” Unlike many rulers throughout history, Attolia doesn’t use her clothing to represent the wealth of her country, but instead uses it to create an image of herself as an uncontested ruler. Because of that, I wanted to keep it relatively simple; I wanted it to be, within the context of this world, immediately recognizable from afar, and really focused on the symbolism rather than intricate detail. Tolkien’s book, The Hobbit; specifically, in the movies An Unexpected Journey (2012), and The Desolation of Smaug (2013). The Hobbit is a story I’ve loved since I was little, and when I first saw the movies, I absolutely fell in love with this costume, and more specifically this coat. Now, years later, I realized that I finally have the skills to actually make this for myself, and that I could learn a lot along the way. It was really fun to try different things and problem solve to make this work, and I got the opportunity to work with some materials and techniques I’d never or barely touched on. I started this costume in early February 2022, beginning with the wig, and ordering fabric samples. It then went on hiatus until early May, when the bulk of the work started. I worked from then until September 1st, when I did the first full try on of the completed costume. This will be my 2022 Halloween costume. The transformation moment is such a powerful one, and I wanted to see if I could create that effect in a coat. This costume is the end result of that. The original concept for this coat came about in 2021, but was put on hold in favor of the Thorin costume. I started playing the game about a year and a half before making this costume, and Variks was immediately one of my favorite characters. It’s inspired by ballet, as well as by the idea of a dusk/dawn spirit. However, I will admit that this is one of the least favorite projects I’ve worked on. While it’s a great costume to learn from, there are a huge number of issues with it that made it uncomfortable and frustrating. Many of these issues come from the fact that I was still pretty new to costuming when I made it, that I used the cheapest fabric I could get, and I rushed my way through it. Made in August 2016, it was based on a drawing made by Nanihoo, an artist on tumblr who, at the time, was putting out a fair amount of fanart for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including their take on the Norse goddess Sigyn. Sadly, the drawing seems to have been lost or deleted, and I don’t feel comfortable reposting the copy I have, but some of the other Sigyn art is still up on their tumblr. With this costume, I experimented with jewelry making, beading, fake armor, and my first attempts at making a corset. I was still really new to making costumes at the time, so a lot of it is fairly rough, and in the detail explanations below, I’ll touch a little on what I would change or do differently if I made this
